Syphilis is caused by Treponema pallidum bacteria. It is commonly transmitted by means of sexual contact, but can also be passed on from an infected mother to her child in the uterus. Before the introduction of serological testing, the latest method in diagnosing syphilis, detection of the disease was always a challenge because syphilis is so complex and often mixed up with other bacteria.
