Occasional sinus infection, inflammation, or congestion is commonplace with almost everyone. Some people, however, experience them more frequently simply because they are more susceptible or prone to sinus problems. One reason is congenital malformation of the sinus cavity. Another reason is chronic allergies.

What causes sinus infection? When pathogenic microbes such as viruses, bacteria, or fungi infiltrate and proliferate in the sinus area, the sinus cavity becomes inflamed. When it does, the result is swelling of the linings in the sinus cavity and the formation of mucus and pus, both conditions of which contribute to blockage.
