Vitamin D is famously known as the sunshine vitamin. The body is able to make vitamin D when the skin is exposed to sunlight. Vitamin D is synthesized when the UV rays of sunlight touch the skin where large amounts of 7-dehydroxycholesterol are stored. Generally, exposure to the sun for an hour a week should allow the body to produce enough vitamin D.
Adults produce less vitamin D, even when they are exposed to sunlight. This is the reason why a lot of adults are asked to check their diets and make sure they are taking in enough vitamin D. Vitamin D is also found in foods of animal origin like liver, butter, egg yolk and some species of fish. Fish liver oil is the most common and richest source of vitamin D.
